What we have been getting up to...

Hello! It's Sarah again, just writing to give you an update on what we've been getting up to at the end of the summer.

As I mentioned in my previous post we attended Forum; a conference run by UCCF aimed at equipping and inspiring CU committees and leaders from across the entire country. We definitely had a brilliant time! I feel like I learnt so much and I've certainly come away knowing that God is in control and has a plan for us, not only as individuals, but also as a Christian Union.

Here's a photo, taken on one of the handful of times when it wasn't raining!

We went to lots of inspiring talks and were challenged everyday during our focus seminars. We gained contacts and connected with CU's from up and down the country. We prayed together and discussed together. We watched Paddington and raved at a silent disco. It was wicked!

We then had a week off, but the time flew and before I knew it, I was packing up the car with clothes and almost the entire contents of Ikea, and making my way back to Northampton.

Having arrived on Tuesday, we got stuck in straight away by connecting with some international students during a games and pizza evening. It was so much fun and we even learnt a new card game and how to say our names in Chinese!

Here's a photo of us with some of our new friends:

After that we ploughed into two days of training with the Student's Union. This was again a great opportunity for us to connect with staff and students from other societies, although very tiring!

We have spent this morning on campus, welcoming in new students and attempting to be friendly faces! I think I speak for all of us when I say we are really excited for the coming week and everything that God has in store! Our events are finally coming together, the flyers have been made and Facebook has been updated... all that's left now is to pray, trust God and get out there and do it!

"'For I know the plans I have for you,' delares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.'" - Jeremiah 29:11

Hello! My name is Sarah and I am the president of the University of Northampton Christian Union (UNCU). I am very excited to be writing the first blog on our newly relaunched website.

I am wondering who might be reading this. I guess you could be a member of our CU already; in which case, I hope you have had a fantastic summer and I can’t wait to see you again in September.

Or you could be a new student. Let me take this opportunity to welcome you to Northampton. I really hope I can make contact with each and every one of you during freshers week.

Or maybe you’re a parent of a new student. I’m sure my parents would have appreciated somebody telling them that their daughter would be ok! I promise to take the best care of them I can, and as a committee, we have been praying for them long before they got their exam results.

Or you could be my mum, who feels bad that nobody might read my hilarious blog entry so is reading it out of sympathy. Hi Mum.

The past year at Northampton CU has been interesting! Let me be honest, we are not a particularly big CU but you know what they say, “good things come in small packages.” They also say, “poison comes in little bottles”, but what do ‘they’ know really? And who are ‘they’..? The most important thing though is that we have God at our heart. During a conference the committee attended earlier this year, we were given a picture of everyone standing around a cross. In one hand they held onto all their individual traits, beliefs, opinions and thoughts, but the other hand was reaching out and touching the cross. I think this is a great representation of what we are like at UNCU – all different but ultimately we have Jesus in common.

So we want to welcome you, whoever you are and wherever you’re at to come and join us. Diversity is good and discussion is encouraged. If everyone were like me, we would all be busy watching funny Segway videos on YouTube, drinking tea, laughing at our own jokes and dancing around to George Ezra.

And as for being small, Luke 12:32 says,

“Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.”

To be a mighty “little flock”, we need some prayer particularly for our new freshers (who no doubt are going to be awesome) and for us as a committee as we finish planning/organising/panicking about freshers week and also attend Forum (find out more about Forum by clicking here).

If you would like to know more about UNCU, feel free to explore the website. You can also find us on Facebook and Twitter (links at the bottom of each page) and we have an email address too (find that on the ‘Contact Us’ page).

I'm going to leave you with a picture of us, the committee so you can familiarise yourselves with our ugly mugs. We really are psyched to meet you!

A blog from our Secretary

Here is a slightly later than normal blog post from our Secretary, Zoe. Have a read to find out some of the things we have been up to...

Time has flown Freshers are starting to settle down to their new environments and people are clicking into routine. Equip (CU meeting) has seen a great regular number of people turn up each week of at least 30 people, friendships are building, small groups and the like are going well and we've had our first mini mission.

On campus our two small groups are currently going through Uncover with about 15 people going and are spread out between the two groups. A couple of Saturday’s ago some of us headed to our first ‘outside uni’ event. UCCF hosted a day called Transformission where we got to hear about God’s word and got to worship with CU’s from different universities.  The day also included judging and eating cakes by those who participated in the CU bake of. Our CU was proud to come back as second place winners!

Lastly on 21st and 23rd of October we hosted a lunch bar entitled ‘Is God really there’, a quiz night and grill a Christian. Our lunch bar and grill a Christian gave those with questions the opportunity to come and get them answered. Quiz night saw a turnout of 42 people, there was a great atmosphere of chatting and laughter.

God is working with us and through us in incredible ways and his work has only just begun.

Check back soon to find out some more exciting things we have been up to!

October's news!

Following on from our blog post from Matt in September, we have October's edition from our Vice President Chloe. Find out about what we got up to during Fresher's week and some of the things we have got coming up...

Wow, what a great few weeks we have had! Fresher's week went amazingly well. Through our Lunch Bar events and Text a Toastie evening non-Christian students got the opportunity to hear the good news – along with some free food! Alongside this we had our first CU social where Christians new to the university got to meet one another. An evening of tangle, wink murder and signs – intrigued?

The next week saw the start of the main CU meetings called Equip. We had over 15 Freshers return, greatly boosting our numbers and the singing in the worship. As tradition a group then followed onto the pub, however with a group remaining to simply chat at the end of Equip – we are open to anything new!

As for the rest of October our CU Small Groups start up and we will have a mini mission’s week called a ‘GO’ week. Our events will include a Lunch Bar, Quiz night and a Grill a Christian. Finally, we are attending an event called Transformission, ran by UCCF. It’s a chance for the CU to become equipped and encouraged for mission on campus. Keep a look out on here for more information!

Make sure you check back next month to find out how these events go and what else we have got coming up later in the term!
