New academic year... A fresh start

This is the first in a series of blog posts that will be brought to you throughout the year from our committee members. It is a chance for you to find out some of the things they have been up to and things they are looking forward to. We start off with our President, Matt, telling you about some of the things he has been up to this summer and about the events we have got coming up during Fresher's Week...

Welcome to the University of Northampton Christian Union, my name is Matt and I am the new President of the CU.  As a Christian Union we are very excited about starting this year, we have had a great summer break planning and preparing for the new term. Last week the Committee went away to Forum National – a UCCF training conference for CU leaders. We had an amazing week becoming equipped for leadership of the Christian Union and have been immensely encouraged to go back to campus and share the great Gospel message with students at the University of Northampton.

This September is going to be bigger and better than ever with more CU events happening during Fresher’s Week than ever before.  We promise to give students the chance to meet other Christian students on campus and to provide a space for fresher’s coming to university to think about Christianity.  In order to do so, we’re putting on ‘Lunch Bars’ (whereby a free lunch is provided with a short talk and a chance to discuss some Christian thoughts), ‘Text-a-Toastie’ (students can text the CU any question they have about God or Christianity and we will give them a free toastie and attempt to answer their question), and the ‘New to CU’ evening will give students who are interested in joining the Chirstian Union a chance to learn more about the CU and a chance to meet some of the 2nd and 3rd years in the CU.

Finally, on the first four Sundays of term, we will be running ‘Church Search’, giving students’ the opportunity to try out different churches around the town as we really want fresher’s to feel settled and at home in Northampton as soon as possible. So a big welcome to all those joining the University of Northampton, especially if you are interested in joining the Christian Union or want to know more about being a Christian at University.  Not forgetting that we shall be running our weekly main meetings ‘Equip’ from Tuesday 30th September at 7pm in Delapre Lecture Theatre - we would love to see you there!

You can find out more about the committe here. Don't forget to check back next month to find out what another of our committee members has been up to!

Church Search

Worried about leaving your church at home and not finding one in Northampton? Worried about having to turn up to a new church on your own? Don't worry! For the first 4 Sunday's of term we have our 'Church Search' where representatives from the local churches come to meet you on campus, tell you a little bit about their church and then if you decide you'd like to try it they will take you there. The 4 Sunday's will give you an opportunity to try out some of the different churches and then hopefully by the fifth Sunday you will have found somewhere you feel happy going along to. This is not always the case for everyone though and for some people it takes them a lot longer to find a church in Northampton they are happy in!

Congratulations!

So it's A-level results day and presumably if you're reading this you have got the grades required to come to Northampton Uni - well done and welcome! We are all so much looking forward to meeting the new freshers who will be joining us, and are incredibly excited about what God has in store for us on our campus over the next year. Final arrangements are being put in place for the events we have got planned for Freshers Week and hopefully very soon we will be able to publish the final outline of events for you to see. If you are heading our way in September we would love to hear from you so do get in touch with us either via Facebook or Twitter. Make sure you have a look around our website to find out some of the different things we get up to and see some pictures from events we've held over the last year. You can also find out about the committee who will be leading and guiding the CU throughout the next year here.

We hope you enjoy the last few weeks of your summer holidays, whatever you will be doing, and know that you are all in our prayers as you build up to the beginning of your time with us in Northampton. We are so excited about everything God has in store for us all and our university over the coming years.

See you soon!

Planning for next year

Today the committee (you can find out more about us here) had a very exciting day planning for next year. We finalised our plans for Fresher's Week, sorted out the schedule for Equip on Tuesday evenings, started to think about our bible studies and Small Groups, along with many other exciting things! Most of us are heading home over the next few weeks to begin our summer holiday's and are looking forward to a time of refreshing and renewal with our families and friends. But come September we will all be ready to return, meet the new students here and begin another exciting year here in Northampton!
